Travelling
to Sicily
Sicily is more than 1700 miles from
London so if time is of the essence the easiest way
to get there is by flying. However, a viable alternative
is to drive to Genoa and take the ferry to Palermo
which takes 20 hours and has very good cabins and
facilities onboard. The ferries are operated by Grandi
Navi Veloci (0039 010 589331) and they also run from
Livorno and Valencia to Sicily. Ferries from mainland
southern Italy to Sicily take less than an hour and
operate continuously.
There are direct trains from Milan, Florence, Rome,
Naples and Reggio di Calabria to Messina and on to
Catania and Palermo. The trains are transported to
the mainland by ferry from Villa San Giovanni and
unfortunately there can be long delays in the service
on this route.
Flights from London to Sicily take approximately three
hours and British
Airways, Air
Malta, Easy
Jet and Ryanair
all fly direct. Alitalia
(0870 5448259) and Meridiana
(020 78392222) also fly to Sicily with connections
in either Rome, Milan or Florence.
During the busier travel months from April to September
there are charter flights available operated by British
Midland (0870 607 0555), JMC Airlines (0870 0100434)
and Thomson
fly (0870 1900 737). British Midland flies from
London to Catania and Palermo, both Thomson fly and
JMC Airlines fly to Catania from London and Manchester.
