Villa Calaforno is situated just outside of the quaint and typical small town of Giarratana. The town is well known for its onion festival and cattle market both held in August. The open-air museum is an interesting feature, situated in the old streets towards the top of town. These streets have been left exactly as they once were, and free for you to explore, giving you the opportunity to see how the local houses once looked inside, and how tradesmen and craftsmen carried out their occupations.
The location is superb for trekking through the wonderfully preserved countryside or even on horseback. The Calaforno national park is a great place for nature lovers, there is also a good restaurant there. Local delicacies include honey, almond nougat, olive oil and plenty of fresh and dried herbs. The nearby quaint town of Monterosso is often used as a film set and the ricotta and cherries are particularly good here. A visit to the nearby farms to see ricotta making and taste the local produce can be arranged.
The property is within easy reach to Sicily's finest Baroque towns including Ragusa, Noto, Siracusa and Modica. The town of Palazzolo Acreide is only a 15 minute drive and is a fine example of Baroque; a facade of gargoyle balconies, fine churches and site to the impressive Greek remains of Acrae including a well preserved theatre used regularly for Greek drama. The prehistoric necropolis of Pantalica and nature reserve are also a short distance away and beautiful sandy beaches are reachable in 30 minutes. Catania is conveniently located at only 80km making it the nearest airport and an easy day trip for exploring Mt Etna.
