Panarea is the smallest of the Aeolian islands and an ancient inactive volcano. It is a splendid combination of lush vegetation, clear waters and typical Aeolian white houses. Panarea is renowned for being a hotspot for the elite tourist.
The main village, San Pietro consists of a group of white houses clustered along the eastern side of the island. Here you will find plenty of excellent restaurants, bars and boutiques. There are thermal springs near the village of Punta di Peppe e Maria. Scuba diving is a popular excursion and you can even swim to a shipwreck between the offshore rocks of Lisca Bianca and Bottaro.
Everything on the island is in very close proximity. Cars are not permitted on the island; forms of transportation include golf carts, mopeds and boats that can all be hired. There are also some excellent boat tours of the island.
Travelling to the island is easy, there is a ferryboat and hydrofoil service that connects Sicily with the islands. The service can also take you between the islands of Lipari, Vulcano, Stromboli, Salina, Alicudi and Filicudi. A helicopter service is also available between the islands.
